Licensed options

A small number of medicines are licensed in the UK for weight management in adults. They either reduce how much fat is absorbed from food, or act on hormones involved in appetite and fullness. All are intended for use alongside diet and activity changes.

How prescribing works

Prescription-only medicines must be prescribed by a qualified prescriber after an assessment of your health, and supplied by a registered pharmacy. Completing an assessment doesn’t guarantee a prescription — a prescriber may decide a medicine isn’t appropriate.

NHS and private routes

On the NHS, these medicines are offered in line with NICE guidance and local criteria, usually with a weight management programme. Private services can also prescribe after an assessment.
